Aventyno Z

As in 1997 Aventyno Z also managed to reach the jump-off of the finals of the World Championships for Young Horses of 1998. The few products supplied by Aventyno Z in his first season at Zangersheide show good promise. His quality son Aventendo II was sold at the World Championships Elite Auction for Bfr. 330.000. The sire of Aventyno Z, Argentinus, is a proven Oldenburg jumping horse progenitor. Many of his offspring perform at a high level, such as the winner of the `98 Berlin Youngsters Cup Anka {Marcus Ehning} and the International jumpers Autogramm (Thomas Mühlbauer}, A-Dur I (Sören Knudsen} and Furiosa (Elmar Gundel}. The latter comes, like Aventyno Z himself, out of a Furioso II daughter. This son of the legendary Furioso xx has greatly influenced showjumping horse breeding through many licensed sons, of which Voltaire, Purioso and For Pleasure are the most famous. Also in the female line of the showjumping horse sires Welt As (Weltmeister} and Grosso Z (Goliath Z} we find the blood of Furioso II. Aventyno Z`s dam`s lineage goes back through Urgast (Usurpator xx family} and the legendary Thoroughbred Vollkorn to the Oldenburg Gritta lineage. This reputable Oldenburg family has produced, besides Aventyno Z, also other licensed stallions such as Frühling/Landjonker (Landadel}, Leander (Lord} and Avellynus (Argentinus}.

Pridwell

Owned for his jumps career by Malcolm Jones, David Berstow and Chris Fleet, Pridwell was sent hurdling after three unplaced runs on the Flat for Roger Charlton. He went on to win 14 races for Pipe, accumulating over £250,000 in prize-money, having cost just 8,500gns. The son of Sadler`s Wells landed four Grade 2 events - Ascot`s Coopers & Lybrand Hurdle, Wincanton`s Elite Hurdle, Wetherby`s Tote West Yorkshire Hurdle and the Foodbrokers `Finesse` Four-Year-Old Hurdle at Cheltenham. He also ran twice in three days at the Festival in 1994, finishing second to Arctic Kinsman in the Citroen Supreme Novices` Hurdle, before a seventh place 48 hours later in the Triumph Hurdle. But it was the nine-year-old`s narrow defeat of Istabraq in the Martell Aintree Hurdle that stamped Pridwell as a true hero.

Pridwell seemed something of a reformed character in the 1997/8 NH season, starting off with three straight wins and then failing only narrowly to give Relkeel 8lb at Cheltenham, and he ran better than his finishing position suggests against Istabraq in the Champion Hurdle, where he might well have been second but for giving away ground at the start.

Pridwell was on his very best behaviour to win the 1998 Martell Aintree Hurdle. If ever one could have excused him for downing tools, it was in these conditions. But he travelled well from the start, much handier than he often is on account of the pace, and he could not have battled more willingly for Tony McCoy, who forced him back up close home with another power-packed finish after Champion Hurdle winner Istabraq had looked sure to win when taking a narrow advantage on the run-in.

Although effective from 2m to 3m, the intermediate distance suits him well. Istabraq and Pridwell had the race to themselves after quickening clear impressively from the rest three out, and while Istabraq never looked quite the `good thing` his 10 straight wins and 12l margin in the Champion Hurdle suggested he was, one always expected his class to prevail.

The slow pace probably did not help him, as he was heavily restrained in rear in the first half of the race and always looked as if he would be more comfortable going a stride faster, and he drifted noticeably to the left under pressure on the run-in. But with hindsight it was perhaps expecting too much of him to be as effective over 2m4f in deep mud as he had been at Cheltenham over 2m on top of the ground, and this defeat should not be allowed to detract from a magnificent performance at Cheltenham.

McCoy galvanised the gelding with the driven determination that has become his hallmark to pip the Irish raider in a nail-biting finish. The rider received a controversial four-day ban for his use of the whip, a period which was later extended to six days after an unsuccessful appeal. But Racing Post readers took a more positive view, voting the performance the best of 1998.

Pipe stated: "The Aintree race was fought out between two brilliant horses and riders. "He won plenty of top races and, as well as his Graded victories, in 1995 he beat Mysilv at Ascot and was third in the Tote Gold Trophy, while he was second to Relkeel in the 1997 Bula."

In December, it was announced that Pridwell has been retired. "The horse had a very nasty over-reach to his tendon after running at Kempton last season and he deserves a happy retirement," his trainer Martin Pipe said yesterday. "Although he had his idiosyncrasies, Pridwell was a perfect gentleman in and out of his stable.

"We will all miss him, none more so than his lass, Donna Cornforth-Smith."

Tony McCoy on Pridwell

NO-ONE is more sad than me that Pridwell has been retired. He was a brilliant horse on his day - hard to predict but unbeatable when he chose to use all his ability. I loved riding him, because you had to think on him and do everything you could to keep him thinking he was the bee`s knees. As long as you could get there on him before you had to make him get there, you were all right.

Last year I was very proud to receive the Racing Post`s award for the best riding performance for my efforts on him in the Martell Aintree Hurdle. You don`t like to be praising yourself, but I do think it was the best ride I have ever given a horse. To this day, I can`t see myself ever giving a horse a better one. Pridwell wanted to go - he wanted to win as much as me.

I remember the race as if it were yesterday. The ground was terrible, but Pridwell was happy because he was doing things at his own speed. Four out, he was upsides Istabraq and loving it, and I just pulled him back a touch. I had to get him to do it without bullying him - if I tried to force him to jump off, he`d just stand there, look round and ask, `what do you think you`re playing at?`

Coming into the straight, I knew Istabraq was just behind me and so I just eased out a touch - I didn`t mind Charlie Swan [Istabraq`s rider] having to go out in the middle of Aintree just a bit!

He jumped the second-last and I was pushing away, but I never touched him, and it wasn`t until we were headed on the run-in that I started to give him a smack and he really battled. To beat Istabraq like that was something special. Pridwell won lots of good races, but it will be Aintree I remember most. I really bonded with him - both of us wanted it.
